Knitwear is what you actually wear through an American winter, because most of it is spent indoors going between rooms that are too warm and streets that are too cold. A coat does not solve that. A cardigan does.

Cardigans open, which is the entire point: on at nine, off at eleven, without changing your outfit. If your office runs cold in summer and warm in winter, this is the category to start with. Sweaters and turtlenecks are warmer for the same weight because there is nothing open at the front, and a turtleneck covers the gap a scarf usually has to fill. Knitted vests add a layer over a shirt without committing to sleeves.

Texture decides how it wears. Cable knits are heavier and hold their shape. Ribbed knits have more give and follow the body. Fine knits layer flat under a coat without bulking up the shoulders — worth checking if you wear a coat over everything from November onward.

Care. Composition is listed where the supplier specified it. A cool wash and drying flat keeps knitwear in shape far longer than a dryer will.
