Quilted and padded jackets take over when the wind picks up; the fill is synthetic rather than down, which holds its warmth better when it gets damp and costs a good deal less. Bomber jackets handle the mild end, and padded gilets cover the strange in-between days when a coat is too much but a sweater is not enough.
