Coats

A coat is the one thing you put on every day for five months, so it is worth choosing on more than color. These are grouped by the four shapes that behave differently once you are actually outside in them.

Wool-blend coats are the structured option: long enough to cover a skirt or a suit, warm without bulk, and the right answer for an office and the commute either side of it. They are the wrong answer for standing in the rain. Trench coats sit at the opposite end — light, belted, made for a gray changeable day rather than a cold one. Buy a trench for March and October, not January.

Teddy coats trade structure for warmth. The brushed pile holds heat well and forgives a bulky sweater underneath, which makes them the weekend coat rather than the meeting coat. Belted and double-breasted styles change shape depending on how you wear them: tied in, they define a waist; left open, they read as a straight overcoat.

Sizing. Nearly everything here is cut with layering in mind, so your usual size is right unless a heavy sweater is going underneath — then take one up.
