Two features do most of the work. The first is midsole cushioning — padding between your foot and the ground that absorbs impact. It is the reason a good walking shoe leaves you tired rather than sore. The second is the outsole: a textured, non-slip tread holds on wet sidewalks and polished tile, where a smooth sole is genuinely unsafe.

Lace-ups let you set the tension across the instep, which is what you want if your foot is narrow at the heel or wide at the front. Slip-on styles trade that adjustment for speed. Several models here also carry a contoured footbed for arch support — described as orthopedic-style, meaning shaped for everyday comfort rather than prescribed.
