Men’s and women’s scales are different. A men’s 9 is not a women’s 9 — match on foot length, not on the number.

How to measure

Your foot

  1. Put a sheet of paper flat against a wall and stand on it, heel touching the wall.
  2. Mark the paper at the tip of your longest toe — that is not always the big toe.
  3. Measure from the wall edge of the paper to the mark.
  4. Measure both feet and use the larger one.
  5. Do it at the end of the day, when your feet are at their widest.

Your body

  • Bust or chest — around the fullest part, tape level all the way round and not pulled tight.
  • Waist — around the narrowest part of your natural waist, above the navel.
  • Hip — around the fullest part, roughly 8 in (20 cm) below the waist.

Measure over underwear or a thin top, not over a jumper. Keep the tape snug enough to stay in place but loose enough to slide a finger under.

  • Button Front: Buttons rather than a zip, which keeps the line clean and lets you wear it open.
  • Oversized Fit: Room for a layer underneath. If you usually wear a jumper under a coat, this is the cut that stops you shrugging your shoulders to fit.
  • Layering: Sized to sit over a jumper rather than against the skin, which is what makes it usable in January.
  • Care: Cool wash, reshape while damp and dry flat. It keeps its line far longer than it would on a hanger.
  • Sizes XS to 2XL: Take your usual size for the relaxed fit the cut intends, or size down once if you want it closer to the body. Between sizes, go up. All 6 sizes run the same.
